Kansas City was the home of The Woodlands racetrack which first opened its gates to racing, albeit greyhound racing organised by the National Greyhound Association, in 1989. The track took advantage of the relaxed gambling laws in Kansas to make use of a pair-mutuel system, and on 24th May 1990 it held its first horse race meeting. The extensive 8 furlong oval track, with separate 6 furlong chute, had a 314 metre home straight, offered a programme of thoroughbred and quarter horse racing. The highlight of the racing year was the Kansas (Woodlands) Derby, although other feature races included the Kansas Futurity, the Kansas Jackpot Derby (last winner in 2007 was Ritzy Dash), the Kansas Jackpot Futurity (last winner in 2007 was DMNV Mountable), and the Woodlands Championship (last winner in 2007 was Tres Cute), but by 2007 the venue had run out of steam. The final meeting took place on 27th October 2007, although principal race winners are shown below.
